Now comes a Bachelor of Exercise Science programme and the second Border Gavaskar Scholarship for students who want to pursue a career in sports. Launched by Padmashree Dr DY Patil University (DDYPU) in partnership with the Griffith University (GU), the Border Gavaskar scholarship will be awarded to an Indian student to complete a Masters by course work programme at GU - Australia’s ninth largest higher education institution with five campuses spanning three cities.

The scholarship covers university fees, living costs and travel expenses for the duration of the programme which starts in July 2010.

“Both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar were keen that it would not be offered as a sports scholarship and they decided it should be given on academic merit. So, a student opting for any course will be considered but the one with the best academic results will win it,” said Rahul Mankad, Regional Director — South Asia & Middle East, Griffith International.

The Bachelor of Exercise Science programme comprises three and a half years which is spread between DDYPU and GU. The first part of the course — a year and a half’s academic instruction and six months internship — will be delivered at the Padmashree DDYPU campus leading to a Diploma of Exercise Science and the second phase of the programme spanning two years will be delivered in the Gold Coast Campus of GU leading to a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science.

Students in the 10+2 science stream are eligible to enter the course.
Aiming to develop exercise specialists and clinical scientists specialising in cardiac, respiratory and biomechanical disciplines, the programme will provide opportunities for graduating students to work in India as well as in international markets. Career prospects would include becoming clinical specialists in cardiac and respiratory medicine; exercise specialists for community or sports organisations; sports coaching; rehabilitation, sports or recreation managers; sports science administrators; specialists in occupational health and safety and fitness specialists.

According to a press release GU is offering a tuition fee waiver for one student amongst every 10 students that are participating in the second phase of the programme on its campus leading to the degree. “ We also intend to set up a world class sports testing and rehabilitation facility here,” said Christopher Madden, Pro Vice Chancellor, International, GU.
“This programme will give our students access to some of the best facilities in sports and sport science in Australia and India,” said Dr. Vijay D Patil, President, Padmashree DDYPU.

Future endeavours of both universities include establishing an “International Sport Centre of Excellence” at Padmashree DDYPU that will include a state-of-the-art sports testing and rehabilitation
facility.
