AU focal point of agitation

Andhra University campus has become focal point for the agitation against the Centre's decision on Telangana and the region's demand to keep the State united.

Even before the Centre announced that the process for forming the Telangana State has commenced, students of AU colleges were taking out rallies and held demonstrations demanding the Government to keep the State united. The unilateral announcement by the Centre has only angered the students and others.

As many as 10 students launched an indefinite fast, albeit in two different camps and once again the campus is witnessing politicians visiting it to express their solidarity to the students.

So far the students are conducting the agitation in a peaceful manner and there appears no possibility of it turning violent on their own. Any untoward incident that happens outside the city might have its impact here. The teachers are likely to extend their support to their students in due course of time.

The agitation is expected to become more vigorous from Monday when the students who have gone home in view of the two-day bandh that was followed by Sunday return to the campus.

AU lab receives donation

The Swam Jnanananda Laboratories of Department of Nuclear Physics of AU has received 6,000 US dollars for the first phase of its plans to give a face lift to the front elevation and the area where the Jnanananda's statue was installed. One of the large halls of the department would be refurbished and named as the Jnanananda Seminar Hall.

The Swamy Jnanananda Trust was established in memory of the saint-scientist at Goranganamudi in West Godavari district with Mr. B. Rama Raju as its chairman. Swamy Jnanananda was responsible for the establishment and growth of nuclear physics discipline in AU, an institution which was the first in the country to initiate imparting higher education in nuclear sciences from 1945.

On behalf of the trust B. Krishna Varma Raju handed over a cheque to Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana last week. Executive Council Members S.V.S.S. Ramachandra Raju and I. Murali Krishna Rao, Principal of College of Science and Technology P. Rajendra Prasad and HoD of Nuclear Physics and others were present.

Training in counselling skills

Prof. Satyanarayana inaugurated a five-day training programme on counselling skills at the Department of Social Work. The programme is sponsored by the National Institute of Social Defence of the Central Government.

Director of Global Institute of Behavioural Technology (Coimbatore) V. Ganeshan delivered key note address. Principal of College of Arts and Commerce L.K. Mohana Rao, presided. HoD of Social Work R.D. Sampath Kumar explained about the training programme, in which 40 delegates belonging to government departments, family counselling centres and HIV/AIDS related projects.

Ambedkar remembered

Andhra University Dr. Ambedkar College of Law observed the death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Prof. Satyanarayana garlanded the bust of Dr. Ambedkar in the presence of VC of AP University of Law Y. Satyanarayana, Principals of AU campus colleges, Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy, Prof. Murali Krishna Rao, Director of Admissions O. Aniel Kumar and others.

Anti-corruption day

Samata College observed Anti-corruption Day on December 9. Students of the college along with members of Lok Satta went in a rally from the college to the Alwar Das circle in MVP colony. Principal S. Vijaya Ravindra director B. Muralikrishna and others were present.

Students donate blood

NSS units of degree colleges conduct blood donation camps and the one at Anil Neerukonda Institute of Technology and Science (ANITS) organised at the NRI General Hospital, Sangivalasa turned out to be different in one way. Out of the 35 students from EEE branch who donated blood, some have rare groups like O negative, B negative and AB. Principal V.S.R.K. Prasad, superintendent of the hospital K. Venugopala Rao, NSS PO V. Jagannadha Rao were present.

ANITS student to lead

K. Kalyani, a first year B.Tech. (IT) student will lead AU's women team in the South Zone inter-university table tennis tournament to be held at Vijayawada. Kalyani represented AP in the all-India School Games meets and the sub-junior National championships in the past.

Human Rights Day

The IARF organised a meeting at the Vasavi Degree College on the occasion of World Human Rights Day on Dec. 10 to create an awareness among students on the human rights.

AP University of Law VC Y. Satyanarayana told the students to know their responsibilities along with their rights. Government should protest people's basic rights and a new born enters this world with inherent rights, he said..

Chairman of the organisation Narava Prakasa rao presided. Principal of the college D.R.S. Gupta and others spoke.

Receives Ph.D.

B. Govinda Rao of Vizianagaram received Ph.D. in Hindi from AU for his thesis “Mohan Rakesh Ki Kahaniyan: Ek Anusheelan”.Dr. S.A. Suryanarayana Varma was his research guide.
