67,000 appear for IIT-JEE in Chennai

Chennai: In the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT JEE) more than 67,000 boys and girls appear for this year.

The number of aspirants who have applied for the examination has gone up sharply compared to last year when 51,747 candidates had applied for it in the IIT Madras zone comprising the four southern states and Puducherry.

The IIT Madras zone will have the second highest number of applicants after the IIT Bombay zone where approximately 80,000 aspirants have applied and 3.95 lakh candidates across India. In all, the aspirants will be competing to fill up over 7,300 seats in 15 IITs.

This year two new IITs will start functioning at Indore and Himachal Pradesh offering B.Tech programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. In addition to these seats, 47 seats reserved for the Scheduled Tribe students and 19 seats earmarked for the Scheduled Caste students.

This year at the all India level, nearly 40% of the candidates (1.55 lakh) are from the reserved category. To ensure that the seats for SC/STs are not left vacant, IIT directors have decided to hike the 40% relaxation in scores to 50% from 2009. This means that if the last general category student in 2008 was admitted with an overall score of 172 out of 489, the aggregate cut-off for an SC/ST student was 104 (after a 40% relaxation). If the general category cut-off in 2009 remains the same, the bar for SC/ST candidates would be lowered to 86. Subject wise cutoffs would also be affected.
