Kolkata: Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday got a first-hand report of how autonomy was progressing at St Xavier’s College. The CM was one of the main driving forces behind it becoming the first autonomous college of the state three years ago.
St Xavier’s principal, Father Felix Raj, met Bhattacharjee at Writers' Buildings for about 45 minutes on Friday and discussed several issues, including autonomy and the 150th anniversary celebrations that are due for January.
“We have always received tremendous support from the chief minister,” Father Felix said. “I did not carry statistics about our results or placements, but I gave him an outline of these and the strides we have made with our re-organised syllabi, teachinglearning and examinations. The chief minister was extremely pleased with the developments.”
Since it was his first visit as principal and a “courtesy call”, Father Felix did not mention the demand for a plot in Rajarhat instead of the lowlying land allotted along EM Bypass. “I will soon be meeting the CM again, when I will talk about the land. We need it quickly because we need to expand,” Felix said.
According to rules, three years after a college is granted autonomy, an internal assessment is done. The college will invite either XLRI, Jamshedpur, or XIM, Bhubaneswar, for the assessment. In the fourth year, Calcutta University will assess the college.
