Kolkata: The National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer team visiting Calcutta University (CU) heaped praise on the institutions efforts to raise the standard of education imparted. If this praise is reflected in the grade CU will be awarded by NAAC later, it will widen avenues from where the university can access funds.
The university has carried out about 75% of all previous recommendations by NAAC. It has taken huge steps to work on those recommendations. The funds CU gets from UGC are a pittance. But it has managed very well despite these constraints, said S P Thyagarajan, who headed the peer team, on Thursday.
The team appreciated the universitys efforts vis-a-vis nano technology, social sciences and research. CU was awarded a five-star grade by NAAC in 2001. The four-day visit by the peer team this time is for the purpose of re-accreditation.
The team recommended improvement in facilities such as hostel, canteen and other services as well as intercampus transport, guest house and tele-networking. As the eight campuses are situated in different corners (of the city), there is a need to develop a virtual network. If all the campuses are linked by tele-networking, there will be better coordination, said Thyagarajan.
The team also suggested extensive use of IT in the evaluation of answer scripts
