Seyed E Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad has been invited to be a member on the newly constituted Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India (SAC-PM).
Prof. Hasnain who was also member of the SAC-PM during 2004-2009 has been re-invited by the Prime Minister to serve in his Advisory Council for another term. He is also a Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Union Cabinet and Chairman, Biotechnology Advisory Council, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
The SAC-PM is the highest body comprising of select Scientists and Secretaries of Science Departments of the Government of India with a mandate to advise the Prime Minister on all matters relating to Science and Technology in the country. The Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India serves as the Member-Secretary of SAC-PM.
Mathematician Sujatha Ramadorai, geneticist B.K. Thelma, physicists Mustansir Barma and A K Sood are among the new entrants to the re-constituted Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM) which will continue to be headed by top chemical scientist C.N. R. Rao.

The first contact class for the PG Diploma in Criminal Justice & Forensic Science under the distance education mode was inaugurated at the University of Hyderabad (UoH). P. Gautham Kumar, Principal Secretary, Home inaugurated the contact programme.
He said that the purpose of Criminal Justice system must be to protect the interests of the 95 per cent of law abiding citizens of our country. The importance of Criminal Justice is increasing day by day; hence such a course would serve the larger interests of the society. About 60 students have enrolled in this PG Diploma programme. This programme is being offered in collaboration with Truth Labs based in Hyderabad.
P.C.K. Gandhi, Chairman, Truth Labs gave an overview of the diploma programme and spoke about the efforts that have gone in designing this programme and the need of conducting such programmes for the police, prosecutors and the judges.
Vice-Chancellor, Seyed. E. Hasnain lauded the efforts of Dr. P.C.K. Gandhi for initiating this particular diploma programme along with the Distance Education Centre at the University of Hyderabad. I. Ramabrahmam, Head, Department of Political Science and associate coordinator for the PG Diploma in Criminal Justice & Forensic Science course, Dr. Geelani, Director, Centre for Distance Education at UoH were present.
RTI Act
Former bureaucrat and social activist, S.R. Sankaran said the Right To Information (RTI) was one of the best formulated legislations in the country and any move by the State amend this legislation must be opposed.
Inaugurating the Southern Regional Convention on RTI held at the University of Hyderabad, he said given his experience as a civil servant, there is no need to introduce the present proposed amendments to the RTI Act that the government is considering. The meeting was attended by over 400 participants from all over India.
The Convention began with an opening plenary discussing the role of RTI, and People's Movements. The session was chaired by Aruna Roy with panelists Haragopal, SR Sankaran, Usha Seethalakshmi, Preeti Sampat, who spoke on the role of Right to Information with regard to issues like the SEZ, violation of Human Rights, including rights of Dalits and minorities. Regional journalists from the Telugu daily Eenadu also spoke about journalists being encouraged to make use of RTI in their reporting and coverage of stories.
