Mumbai: IIM Lucknow and IIM Kozikhode are jointly organising an international conference on ‘Tourism in Global Village- Contemporary Practices and Innovations’ which began yesterday and will go on till tomorrow at IIM Lucknow. The conference brings together the researchers in the field of tourism management and deliberates on the issues facing the industry. The conference will see participation of a large number of domestic and international academic and research organisations. Scholars and specialists from Singapore, UAE, UK and US are participating in the conference. The purpose of the conference is to explore contemporary issues and business factors influencing the present state of tourism across the globe. The conference was yesterday inaugurated by Dr Devi Singh, Director, IIM Lucknow. The keynote address was delivered by Professsor Russell Arthur Smith, Cornell - Nanyang Institute of Hospitality Management, Singapore.
More than 50 research papers will be presented and selected papers will be published in the form of a book. The sessions of the conference will focus on Tourism Management: Conceptual Issues, Technological interventions in tourism, Marketing intervention in Tourism, Budding researchers, Tourism Management - Health and other issues, Finance and HR issues in tourism and Eco-tourism. The topics for discussion will be, ‘Tourism Education in India, challenges and opportunities in Global context’, ‘Role of Public Private Partnership (PPP) in sustainable development of tourism in India’, ‘The ambiguity surrounding Dubai Brands as a tourist destination’, ‘Marketing interventions by MNC’s in tourism and their branding strategies’, and ‘Quantifying the impact of Chikunguniya and Dengue on Tourism’.
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), India is poised to emerge as the second fastest growing (8.8 per cent) tourism economy in the world over 2005-2014. In 2007, around five million tourists arrived in India and spent nearly USD 11 billion. A mix of marketing initiatives and revived interest in India as a tourist destination is making India an attractive tourist destination for the foreign traveller. At the conference, papers will be presented by several academic luminaries. According to WTTC, 215 million jobs were dependent on the ‘Tourism economy’ in 2004. As tourism has become an integral part of modern society, its study and analysis becomes imperative if its potential economic and social benefits are to be maximised and developed in a manner consistent with society’s goals.
