BESU plans open-book exams to modify evaluation system

Kolkata: Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) plans to introduce open-book system during exams to modify the marks evaluation procedure.

'We are making some reforms in our examination system. For the marks evaluation procedure, we want to have different types of evaluation process. There will be projects, viva, group discussions etc besides the traditional written exams. And also, there may be an open-book examination,' BESU Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajoy Kr Ray said.

The open-book system allows students to consult class notes, reference books and calculators while answering questions during exams.

'But the questions will be different from the routine ones and extremely difficult. It needs a good understanding of the subject, so that a student can build up his argument by organising data, examples and theory within a limited time,' he said on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the International School of Business and Media (ISBM) last night.

To make the marking system transparent, students would also be allowed to check their answer scripts after their exams are over, he said.

Till now, students can check their answer scripts only through a special permission under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
