Kolkata: On the third day of agitation and sit-in demonstration in front of the Darbhanga building on Calcutta University’s College Street campus, a procession was taken out by the students throughout the area.
They demanded supplementary examination and requested the authorities to call for an urgent undergraduate council (UG) meeting before December 14.
The students blocked the main gate for over 30 minutes, disrupting work and traffic. A sit-in demonstration also continued throughout the day.
In the evening, vice-chancellor Suranjan Das, pro-vice chancellor (academics) Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, controller of examinations Debashish Chakraborty and registrar Basab Chaudhuri met to discuss the situation.
“A team of students went to meet the V-C. They were promised by him that the authorities had decided to pre-pone the UG council meeting from December 14 to December 10. The meeting will be held from 5 pm immediately after the threeday NAAC visit ends in the university campus. The V-C has also promised to take all the students’ demands under consideration,” said Jyotishko Das, a former student of the university.
Among the demands put forward by the students are an immediate supplementary examination for failed candidates and immediate results, which will not result in the loss of a year. The grievances of individual students regarding low marks will now be addressed by CU if they forward a letter with marksheets attached — through their principals — to the controller of examinations. “The V-C has also promised to reconsider those university regulations which restrict a supplementary to be taken each year,” Das added.
“We have asked the students who have scored poorly to submit their complaints through the college principals and we will take up the matter. The only decision which we took today was to pre-pone the UG council meeting to December 10, though they were demanding the meeting on even earlier,” said the pro-vc (academics) Dhurubajyoti Chattopadhyay.
Sourav Das, a final-year student of computer science in Belur Agrasain College, said: “Last year, I scored poorly in one of my mathematics (pass) subjects. I reappeared for the test this year. Again, the marks are miserable, which I think is incorrect.
