Kancheepuram: Modern youth acquire lot of 'negative things' through media said VC of Indira Gandhi National Open University, V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai.
Addressing students and academicians in the three-day International Conference on Life Skills Education (LSE) at the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur, the Vice-Chancellor said that LSE curriculum addressed most important aspects like developing the ability to realize individual’s identity, develop the ethos of self-esteem and help them understand the context of society, which was determined by various factors such as language, social setup etc.
Although youth acquired adequate knowledge through education system, they failed to understand the purpose for which they acquired such knowledge.
The LSE programme should be evolved in such a manner that it addressed the social structure, he added. Mr. Pillai also regretted that not much importance was given to human values in the present formal education system.
Also sharing the podium, the assistant representative of the United Nations Family Planning Authority, India, Venkatesh Srinivasan said lack of life skills was the foremost reason for youth being afflicted with HIV infection in the age group of 15 to 29.
According to a survey conducted by the National AIDS Control Organisation, 90 per cent of youth were aware of the means HIV was transmitted.
Providing life skills would help them to use the acquired knowledge and attitudes to take balanced decisions that are highly essential for life's success.
