Shantineketan: Visva-Bharati authorities spent Rs 60 lakh on conducting admissions tests outside West Bengal only to find students were not interested in studying at the university.
The financial loss, said a university official on condition of anonymity, came at a time when the institute is facing a funds crunch.
Rabindranath Tagore built Visva-Bharati, his dream university, in 1921. It became a Central university in 1951 and an institution of national importance.
Around 5700 students sat for admission test in West Bengal compared to 31 in Ranchi, 4 in Hyderabad and 40 in New Delhi.
Students out of West Bengal reportedly did not take the test because of the university’s reputation has slipped. The institute is said to be more local than national.
University authorities declined to comment. No steps have so far been taken to restore the university’s image to attract talented students.
