Over 1.1 lakh single teacher schools in the country, says govt

New Delhi: Over 1.1 lakh government elementary schools in the country are functioning with just one teacher, Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari told the Lok Sabha today.

Quoting the data of District Information System for Education for 2007-08, Purandeswari said that 1.17 lakh government elementary schools are being run by a single teacher. About 12.82 lakh teachers have been provided to states and Union Territories under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan so far, she said in a written reply.

The percentage of single teacher government elementary schools have declined from 14.2 per cent in 2005-06 to 11.7 per cent in 2007-08
