Two senior professors of Andhra University are in the race for the post of Vice-Chancellor of Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajahmundry. The choice is between HoD of Commerce and Management Studies Balla Appa Rao and an Executive Council Member Gangaram, according to campus sources. There is also a likelihood of a senior administrator who is retiring very soon, being considered. However, support of a Lok Sabha Member of East Godavari is said to be the key factor. The MP is now in a position to decide matters in the changed equations of power. Another rumour making rounds in the campus is that a retired Principal and a former VC of another university is likely to be made Chairman of the AP State Council of Higher Education once the posts falls vacant after the present Chairman completes his term.
This is also due to the changes in power witnessed after the death of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
New scales after Hyderabad elections?
Information from Hyderabad pleased the AU teachers a lot. It is that the Chief Minister, when a group of universities' teachers met him, assured them that the pay-scales recommended by the VI Pay Revision Commission would be implemented after the code of conduct for the greater Hyderabad corporation elections comes to an end.
Teachers of degree colleges are also likely to get the benefit. The teachers are also hoping that the recommendations made by the UGC to increase the age of retirement on superannuation to 65 in the case of university teachers and 60 for the college teachers will also be implemented. Some say this is also one of the reasons for the AU administration not going ahead with filling up of vacancies of teachers. AU is facing funds crunch and paying salaries for the new teachers will be a problem.
But this can be solved to an extent if the seniors are continued.
