A centre of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will be set up at Katihar by 2011 at a cost of Rs 400 crore, to be provided by the Centre.

This was announced here today by AMU Vice Chancellor P.K.Abdul Aziz while speaking to newsmen after his meeting with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in this regard.

Dr Aziz said the decision to open the Katihar centre of AMU along with four other centres in different corners of the country at a total cost of Rs 2,000 crores, was taken by the Human Resources Development Ministry following the Sachhar Committee recommendations on educational reform programmes for the minorities.

As per recommendations of the Sachhar Committee, a total of five AMU centres would be opened in different parts of the country during the 11th plan period, Dr Aziz informed.

Speaking on the occasion, Tariq Anwar, MP, said he had requested the Chief Minister to provide about 300 acres of land for the proposed centre at Katihar besides ensuring supply of water, electricity and other basic infrastructural facilities.

When set up, the centre would go a long way in preventing migration of Bihari minority students to other states for higher education,Mr Anwar said adding this would also fulfill a major aspiration of Bihari Muslim students.
