Chennai: As some courses lacks employment skills, the 152-year-old University of Madras has decided to withdraw 6 masters programmes from this academic year.
Dr G. Thiruvasagam, vice-chancellor, University of Madras, said the university had started some courses in the past that lacked employment skills.
'Six courses, including five-year integrated M.A. post-modern development administration, M.A. Anthropology, M.A. French Studies, M.Sc. Life Sciences and M.Sc. Environmental Science attracted fewer students due to which the university decided to withdraw these courses from the ensuing academic year,' he said.
'Only 22 students joined post-modern administration, 10 enrolled in anthropology and life sciences, two students joined environment science; however, no student opted for French Studies. It is difficult for the university to conduct courses with so few students,' Dr Thiruvasagam added.
The vice-chancellor also noted that all heads of departments were instructed to identify courses that attract fewer students. 'We have to revamp courses that do not offer enough employment skill'. When Dr Thiruvasagam assumed charge as vice-chancellor he announced that the university would run existing courses successfully instead of starting new ones
