Noida: A large number of students from Delhi region of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) could not appear for the first paper of class XII exam on Monday because students were not given their ID cards by NIOS on time.
Several students were found in queue outside the NIOS office during the last moment to get their duplicate ID cards. The NIOS caters 1.30 lakh students of NCR.
Without ID cards students were not allowed to appear for the exam. Several students had to appear for the NIOS exam on next session.
"Something was seriously wrong here. Otherwise, how could ID cards not reach several thousand students? Now, all of us have to shell out Rs 50 to get duplicate ID cards,"said Aslam.
"Students were given their ID cards on time, but they seem to have lost them and, therefore, need to be issued duplicate ones,'' said Ajay Singh an NIOS official.
"This year examination and admission process was computerised, because coaching centres earlier used to connive with our officials to enable their students to cheat. But we managed to computerise only 70 per cent of the process. We are mostly online now,'' said Dinesh Singh Bisht, secretary of Delhi region of NIOS.
"Around 3,500 to 4,000 students did not get their ID cards, possibly because they gave NIOS the wrong addresses. We are looking into this and if we find there has been some other shortcoming, we will rectify it. In any case, we have announced today that ID cards will not be compulsory for today's paper. We told students who came to the centre about this, besides making phone calls to concerned students or sending our staff to their homes,'' added Bisht.
Around 200 students have not been able to appear for today's paper. Despite the long queues for duplicate ID cards, NIOS closed its office counters at 2.30pm.
As regards cancellation of thousands of admissions on the alleged ground that students did not pay their fees, Bisht said: "The Delhi region has about 1.30 lakh students. Some of our records seem to have been lost. So, students will have to contact us with proof of payment. The records will then be set right.
Angry students at the regional office had a different story to tell. "We paid our fees by demand drafts, and now they tell us we haven't given the money.''
As for the fate of those who were unable to appear for Monday's paper, Singh said: "We will take suitable steps when we get the complete details.
