Chennai: The state government is planning to conduct class X and Plus-2 examinations in March compulsorily from this academic year.
This would be of much help to students and also enable the directorate of government examinations (DGE) to publish results earlier. Last year, the class X exams started in the first week of March and went up to April second week, whereas exams for Plus-2 started in March first week and ended in last week. The results were declared in June and May respectively.
'There were many instances of confusion in marks of students,' said a source in the school education department. 'In one case the student's mark increased from about 60 to 160 when it was written on the first page of the answer sheet.' More than 100 teachers faced inquiries over mistakes that they committed while evaluating answer sheets. 'Many of them said the mistakes occurred since they were given a large number of answer sheets and very little time,' the sources said.
Teachers favoured conducting class X and XII examinations in the same month, since this would provide them more time to evaluate answer scripts. The DGE is expected to hold a meeting with headmasters of government and aided schools next week.
