The university has introduced the semester system and cumulative grade points for all other postgraduate science courses. For the arts faculty, the semester system has been started only for Bengali and economics for the moment.
Explaining what cumulative grade points mean, CU controller of exams Debashish Biswas said, 'While students would get to know marks that they have scored in their individual papers, the aggregate percentage would be replaced by cumulative grade points which would determine the class they have secured. Thus a grade point of four would mean a candidate has been placed in the first class.' There will be a scale of seven grade points.
In case of undergraduate exams, the pass marks for pass (general) humanities subjects have been raised from 25 to 30. In case of science pass subjects, the earlier system required a student failing in either written or practical exams in Part I to re-appear in the subject as a whole. Under the new system, he can re-appear in only the portion in which he has failed. However, in case of Part III, in the third and final year, one has to pass the subject as a whole.
Under the new system, if a candidate falls short of just one mark in securing 50%, he/she will be given one mark extra. 'In most professional or competitive exams, a minimum of 50% marks is required to qualify for the test. We do not want our students to lose out on the opportunity just for one mark.
The same will be applicable for candidates who fall short of a 55% by just one mark,' said Dhrubojyoti Chatterjee, CU's pro vice chancellor (academic affairs).
While candidates had to write their environment studies paper in Part-I till now, they will now have to write it in the third year. The total marks for this paper has been increased from 50 to 100.
Changes have also been brought in the registration process of students. A unique computerized number will now be given to students that will provide the university academic details about the student, right from his school days at a glance .
