Porayar : The Centre would soon release an amount of Rs 350 crore to set a National Institute of Technology (NIT) at Karaikal, according to Union Minister of State for Planning V Narayanaswamy.
Addressing a joint press conference at Karaikal (an enclave of union territory of Puducherry), with Chief Minister V Vaithilingam yesterday, he said the Puducherry Government had decided to set up the institution at Karaikal.
Political parties in Puducherry had for long been demanding that an NIT be set up in the union territory. Narayanasamy said the district would soon witness rapid development as various projects were being executed there.
A M H Nazeem,opposition leader in the Puducherry assembly, who had for long been demanding setting up at NIT at Karaikal, said the long standing demand of the DMK had been fulfilled. Earlier, Nazeem led a DMK delegation to karaikal, met Narayanaswamy and Vaithilingam and thanked them for the announcement.
