Chennai: The govt that monitors students'admission to government and private medical colleges has allegedly violated admission norms in Madras Medical College and Madurai Medical College
According to Medical Council of India's (MCI's) postgraduate medical education committee, Madras Medical College has admitted 73 postgraduate students in excess of allotted quota and Madurai Medical College, 10 PG students more than what is stipulated by MCI.
The medical education committee found during its meeting held under the chairmanship of Dr Indrajit Ray, pro-vice-chancellor, The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Kolkata, on September 18, that numerous government medical colleges in the country, including Tamil Nadu, had admitted more number of students than their stipulated intake.
Madras Medical College that had to admit 194 students for various postgraduate courses had enrolled 267 (an excess of 73) and, similarly, Madurai Medical College admitted 27 students instead of 17.
Dr J. Mohanasundaram, dean of Madras Medical College, said the college had not violated MCI norms in the postgraduate admission process. 'The MCI had published incorrect statistics on its website. Until two years ago, the college had 25 per cent of seats for all-India quota and later it was increased to 50 per cent, but MCI had calculated the admission this year as 25 per cent all-India quota which created this confusion. However, we have communicated this to MCI for clarification,' he said.
Madurai Medical College seems to be aware of the excess intake but does not see anything wrong in it. Its dean, Dr S.M. Sivakumar, said, 'There is nothing new in MCI asking a clarification from us on excess intake of students for our postgraduate courses. It is a routine affair. Only to check the availability of staff strength, the MCI has asked for an explanation. As the teacher-student ratio is as per the norm, there is nothing to worry about.'
Dr S. Vinayakam, director of medical education, said, 'We admitted the same number of postgraduate students at the Madras and Madurai medical colleges this year as we had done last year. There seem to have been some discrepancies in the number of seats mentioned in the MCI website and we are still trying to check what went wrong. We have sent the MCI an explanation.
