Chennai: Consumer electronics major LG Electronics India has forayed into 'education segment' with a range of products such as network monitors, digital signage and interactive and touch-sensitive white boards (screens), which is aimed at targeting schools, colleges and other institutions in the country.
R Manikandan, Business Group and Marketing Head, Business Solutions, LG Electronics India, estimates the 'IT solutions for education' market at Rs 1,000 crore. He also said that the company is targeting a fifth of the market in the first year, which could go up to a third of the market by 2011. Currently, LG Electronics India is present in the IT business solutions vertical with a range of products in areas such as PC virtualisation, image projections, network storage and commercial display solutions. This division contributes Rs 1,100 crore to the company. 'With the launch of these new products, we hope to add another Rs 200 crore initially,' said Manikandan.
The interactive touch-screen board (computer-enabled 60-inch Plasma screen) can play all types of educational content, according to Manikandan. 'The teacher can explain by highlighting, writing or even drawing on the screen itself with a stylus.' Also, with LG network monitor, one desktop PC can be shared by 10 students at a time. 'The education content can be in the form of Powerpoint or movie files that would enable one-to-one teaching process with computer access to every student,' he explained.
The company plans to tap one lakh schools and educational institutions in the next three years with its education vertical and expects to sell two lakh units in the first year itself. While the monitors would be manufactured at its Noida plant, the other products would be imported from its headquarters in Korea.
