Chennai: About 15,000 students of Tamil Nadu Open University received their graduation certificates from Chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala during the universitys convocation ceremony held at the Centenary Auditorium in University of Madras here on Wednesday.
Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudy were also present on the occasion, during which Kalyani Anbuslevam, Vice Chancellor of TNOU highlighted the achievements of the university in a 24-page report.
K Ponmudy, in his felicitation address, highlighted how open-universities were a good platform for providing education to skilled and unskilled labourers. Ponmudy also took the opportunity to request Barnala to work on improving the stature and image of the students from TNOU.
Stalin stressed on the importance of sticking to ones roots after education and propagating the Tamil language.
'Our people are winning Nobel Prizes but are doing little for their motherland. One should help alleviate the poverty of people here. Only 13 per cent of the youth in Tamil Nadu seek higher education,' Stalin said
