Annamacharyas 600th birth anniversary celebrated

As part of the TTD’s exercise to propagate the glory of Tallapaka Annamacharya among the academic and literate classes by reaching out to universities, a national seminar was conducted on ‘Annamacharya Sahithi Sankeerthana’ at Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV) last Tuesday. The event was conducted jointly by the varsity’s Department of Telugu Studies and the TTD’s Annamacharya Project to commemorate the saint-poet’s 600th birth anniversary.

TTD Executive Officer K.V. Ramanachary explained that seminars were being organised in universities with the noble intention of carrying forward the legacy of Annamayya to the future generations. These seminars were meant to stimulate interest among the scholars to take up research on the various facets of Annamayya.

His unstinted devotion for the Lord of Seven Hills with a pristine heart, his unparallel effort to immortalise his ‘Bhakti’ through the composition of 32,000 songs, his tirade against the societal aberrations and his message on detachment from materialistic pleasures are some of the potential areas of study, he noted and pointed out that the TTD had already announced a monthly scholarship of Rs.6,000 to the scholars pursuing research on him. He also responded positively to the department’s plea to institute a chair in the varsity in the name of Annamayya’s wife, Tallapaka Thimmakka. Annamacharya Project director and ‘Sahasravadhani’ Medasani Mohan delivered the keynote address, while Dravidian University Vice-Chancellor Cuddapah Ramanaiah spoke. In her inaugural address, SPMVV Vice-Chancellor G. Sarojamma called Annamayya a philosopher and reformer par excellence and wanted the TTD to hold such workshops to reach the treasure trove of divine knowledge among the public. Rachapalem Chandrasekhara Reddy, a professor from Yogi Vemana University, appealed to the TTD to conduct competitions for children to create awareness on Annamayya philosophy.
