Ignou launches skill-based programmes

Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) to
jointly promote educational programmes in the skill based domain of apparel, garments and fashion designing to bridge the gap between education and industry requirements.

The MoU was signed by Ignous’s registrar (administration) U S Tolia and AEPC director-general for education and training, Darlie Koshy, in the presence of the vice-chancellor of IGNOU V N Rajasekharan Pillai and AEPC chairman Rakesh Vaid.

The MoU explores various possibilities to set up an activity centre to create avenues for employment in the textile, apparel, lifestyle and retail stores. While pointing out that only 5% of the workforce in the country has certified skills, Pillai said, “It is not always possible for an educational institute to provide infrastructure that is available outside (industry). Providing formal courses with systematic assessment and accreditation will not only enhance the quality of workforce but can provide additional skills if needed, while formally certifying the capabilities of a person.”

AEPC chairman Rakesh Vaid added, “Garment making is a skilled job and one needs a broad base for skill development. By providing such courses at affordable rates, we aim to enhance the level of skills available and provide meaningful employment.”

With a range of flexible programme modules, Ignou aims to launch the courses next year.
