Between 80-93 per cent of students continue to take private tuition classes despite a ban by the school education department in 2001 preventing teachers from conducting such classes.
The findings are from study conducted by the State Council and Education Research and Training (SCERT).
The study found that 80 per cent of students up to Class 8 go for private tuition. The percentage of students attending private tuition increases to 93 per cent for higher secondary classes.
The findings have raised concerns in the state education department, which had enforced a ban on private tuition in 2001. The ban prevents teachers from government and government-aided schools from undertaking such classes. School authorities also have to submit a statement that none of their teachers are giving private tuition.
Teachers blamed a lack of infrastructure and a staff shortage for the situation. Teachers' groups have been asked to submit feedback by the end of October.
