New Delhi: Physically challenged persons will be soon given relaxation at par with SCs and STs for the preparatory courses offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) from the next academic session onwards.
The decision has been taken at the meeting of the IIT Council, held recently.
Preparatory courses are offered by IITs for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students to enhance their level of competence, who fail to secure the minimum marks for entering the merit list. They are called for separate counselling by the IIT-JEE authorities.
Students in this category are taught the same subjects of physics, chemistry and mathematics which they learnt at class-XI and class-XII for one year.
"From the next academic session physically challenged candidates will be given same relaxation and benefits of preparatory courses as that is available to candidates belonging to SC/ST categories," said Gautam Baruah, Director IIT Guwahati.
The Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in his judgement last year had ordered that disabled persons should be upgraded at least the up to the facilities of SCs and STs in the IITs.
