AU postpones examinations

Andhra University campus continues to be quiet. There have been some holidays in the recent past due to festivals and other events and the academic and administrative work has come back to normalcy after the Dasara vacation (extended on their own by the students).

The havoc caused by the floods in some districts had its effect on first and third semester post-graduate examinations of Andhra University. For the convenience of students hailing from these districts, the AU administration has postponed the examinations scheduled to commence in October last week to the second week of November. Postponement of semester examinations has also become necessary as the mid-term online exams have also been delayed.
Centenary of mathematics professor

Department of Applied Mathematics of AU organised a function to celebrate the birth anniversary of a former HOD Tallamraju Venkatarayudu. Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana inaugurated the centenary celebrations while Principal of AU College of Science and Technology P. Rajendra Prasad presided. HoD V. Uma Maheswara Rao, professors P. Gopalakrishna Murthy and L.S.R.K. Prasad and others spoke.

The late professor, hailing from West Godavari district, joined the department then known as Department of Mathematical Physics, in 1943 and between 1961 and 1970 acted as HoD and Chairman of PG Board of Studies. He was UGC emeritus professor in departments of physics and applied mathematics for three years each. Prof. Venkatarayudu passed away in November 1979.
Orientation course

University Grants Commission –Academic Staff College conducted an orientation course in which 30 teachers from different faculties and universities have undergone training. Inaugurating the course, Principal of AU College of Arts and Commerce L.K. Mohana Rao noted that higher education has now become an inter-disciplinary one. Director of UGC-ASC G. Ramachandrudu said goals of higher education are expansion, excellence and inclusion. Professors N.A.V. Prasada Reddy, M. Ramesh Babu and V. Krishna Murthy and others also participated.
Talk on coastal studies

A professor of School of Ocean and Earth Sciences of University of Southampton (UK) Michael Collins delivered a lecture on numerical modelling of sediment dynamics with relevance to coastal studies, at the AU Centre for Studies on Bay of Bengal. Discussing coastal erosion and sediment movement from beach to continental shelf, Prof. Collins said artificial tracers are important to establish the path of sedimentation. The studies could help in understanding the sediment dyna mics of beach and continental shelf environments and if carried out here, might be useful to Visakhapatnam and adjoining areas.

Director of the centre K. Gopala Reddy, Coast Guard official G.P. Raj, professors from different faculties of AU participated in the discussion held after the lecture.
M.Sc. (CS and IS) exams

Andhra University’s M.Sc. (CS and IS) first semester examinations fro I and II year students (both regular and supplementary) will commence on November 12.

The more than 1300 students of 35 colleges appearing for the examination have been allotted seven centers-AU College of Engineering, GITAM and Dr. L.B. College in Visakhapatnam; AU MSN PG Centre, Kakinada; Government College, Rajahmundry; CSN Degree C ollege, Bhimavaram and B.G.B.S. College for Women, Narsapur, Controller of Examinations K. Samrajyalakshmi informed.
Art of Living programme

Art of Living organisation conducted a programme “Stand Up and Light a lamp” at the PRISM College. Planting of saplings is also taken up as an eco-friendly programme.

Members of the organisation Radhika and Kavitha along with Mohan and Rajani conducted the programme.

Eight hundred students of the college participated. College’s director D. Satyanarayana Reddy, Principals of PG and degree colleges S. Srinivasa Rao and B. Umabala respectively were present.
Blood donation camp

As many as 500 students of Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering donated blood at a camp organised by the District AIDS Prevention and Control Society at their college. The camp was inaugurated by Regional Director (medical and health) Geeta Prasad.

Blood Banks of KGH, Indian Red Cross, Govt. Victoria Hospital and A.S. Raja Blood Bank collected blood.
Ph.D. awarded

Andhra University awarded Ph.D. in commerce and management studies to G. Satya Prasad for his thesis “marketing strategies in steel industry (a case study of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant)”. The present VC of Sri Krishnadevaraya University J.V. Prabhakara Rao was his research guide and Prof. V. Krishna Mohan was joint guide.
Former HoD mourned

Department of Geology organised a meeting last week to condole the death of a former HoD Jillella Siva Rama Krishna Rao (82), who passed away on September 24 in the city. The late Krishna Rao, popularly known as JSR to his students, research scholars, and colleagues.

The meeting was presided over by HoD C. Kasipathi. Former HoD ASR Swamy, retired scientist from ONGC G.S. Chary, senior professor M. Chandra Rao, AMD scientists R. Gajapathi Rao and A.Y. Rao, faculty members V.V.N. Rao and M. J. Rao and others spoke about JSR.

The late JSR was well known for his scientific contributions in the areas of manganese, iron and chromite ore deposits. He made prolific contributions in different branches of geology, particularly in economic geology (especially ore petrology and microscopy), mineralogy and geochemistry. Prof. Krishna Rao is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
IMPETUS’09

The Mechanical Engineering Department of Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering (GVPCOE) will be organising for the fourth time its two-day national level technical symposium, IMPETUS’09 from on December 28. The college is NAAC accredited and is the first college to be granted the autonomous status under JNTU-Kakinada. Further details of the symposium can be had from the website:www.impetus09.com
