Free higher education to orphan students: Bangalore University

Many orphan students or the students from the weaker section facing problems to get their higher education. After seeing this, Bangalore University (BU) have come to provide free master degree courses to these students.

And also the varsity has a student adoption scheme has been launched by a varsity to implement this. Under this scheme, orphan students will get free master degree courses and boarding facilities by the Bangalore University. Two programmes also offered under this scheme (Post Graduation and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD)). Currently two girls are pursuing PG courses under this scheme.

Also, a few years ago, the university had reserved seats for candidates seeking admission under transgender category. Further, a senior official in BU while speaking to TOI correspondent said teaching faculties of the university will donate money to provide free education to children under the scheme.

Meanwhile, students falling under this scheme can apply for the programmes by submitting death certificates of their parents and income certificate. KN Ninge Gowda, registrar of BU, said all the students will be given free food and training in personality development. "If students fail to complete the course in the stipulated time, they will be allowed to stay in the hostel till they clear supplementary exams. The university has not reserved a particular number of seats for orphan students; meritorious students will be given seats under the general quota," he added.

As per official data, there are 50 universities in the state, of which 25 are government, 15 deemed and 10 private. Following the same trend, the Odisha government in May this year launched Green Passage scheme for orphan students to ensure that they get free of cost higher education in the state.
