Madurai: The Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers will establish a wing of the CIPET at Idayapatti near Madurai.
Announcing this at the centenary celebrations of former Home Minister P. Kakkan at his birthplace Thumbaipatti near here, Union Minister M.K. Alagiri said that the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET) unit
would give an impetus to plastic industries in the region.
Idaiyapatti would also get a branch of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), the country's first national-level institute in pharmaceutical sciences functioning in Punjab.
He said that Anna University would start functioning in Madurai next year. Efforts were
being taken to set up a unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and a private alloy steel factory near Melur.
