In a big step forward aimed at helping poor students aspiring to join IITs, the standing committee of IIT agreed with ministry's proposal of launching IITPAL (professor-assisted learning) that would proivde free online coaching by IIT professors and other experts to students.
Former IIT, Bombay diretor Ashok Misra has been entrusted the task of making the portal a reality.
The idea is to create an interactive portal that would upload lectures by IIT professors on physics, chemistry and mathematics. Questions of Joint Entrance Examination of past 50 years or more will also be uploaded along with solutions.
"We want to break the stranglehold of coaching centres. Most of them have the database of questions which we will provide free along with solutions," a senior official said, adding that the new scheme will be done on Massive Open Online Courses. Students can send their queries online to individual professors which will be answered. Students will be given assignments. IIT is also agreeable to the idea of having a mobile app of the portal so that students on the move can read lectures and even solve assignments.
