Chennai: IGNOU plans to provide formal education to army men to help them after their retirement.
The Indira Gandhi national open university (Ignou) has recently joined hands with the Indian Army with a new mission of enabling soldiers to become graduates for their future benefit.
Prof Latha Pillai, pro vice-chancellor of The Indira Gandhi national open university (IGNOU), said during the formal launching of sixth Pan Canada Forum here on Saturday that the plan to provide formal education to army men would help them to get placement after their retirement.
As per records, most who join at below 16 did not have adequate basic academic qualification and hence they found it very difficult after their retirement after the age of 40. 'It is found that over 50,000 soldiers are retired every year. So Ignou will target them,' Prof Latha Pillai said.
More focus would be given to provide job-oriented vocational courses in addition to courses like accountancy, signalling and management. They are expected to pick up courses like BA, B.Com and BBA, she added.
