punjab A study conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) has found out that Punjab ranks first in terms of growth in the number of schools.

The study titled 'States Emergence: A comparative analysis of growth and development 2015' noted that Punjab is at the top regarding most educational parameters. The state showed an annual compounded school-opening growth rate of 6.5 per cent between 2007-08 and 2013-14. This growth rate is continuing even in 2015-16. In this parameter, the state is followed by Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir Punjab is also leading in student enrolment growth rate at the annual compounded rate of 8 per cent between 2007-08 and 2013-14. In this aspect, it is followed by the neighbouring Haryana at 5 per cent and Gujarat at 3 per cent. Surprisingly, in this period the student enrolment growth rate all over India was just 1 per cent

In the same period, Punjab also saw its number of teachers increase from about 79,750 to over 2.36 lakh. It has thus, registered a 20 per cent compounded annual growth rate in the number of teachers, the highest found by the Assocham study

Such is the growth in the education sector of Punjab, that in just one year, the state's school education department would likely be able to fill 30,107 job vacancies, while the higher education and language department would cater to 2,198 vacancies

In 2013-14, where 23 per cent of schools in India had computer facility, in Punjab, the percentage stood at 52. In 2007-08, 31 per cent of the Punjab schools had computer facility
Punjab also leads in its educational expenditure in relation to their gross state domestic product. The state spends 4.3 per cent of its gross state domestic product on education, while nationally, 1.3 per cent of the gross domestic product is incurred on education-related expenses. Punjab is followed by Gujarat, which spends 3.3 per cent on education
The educationally backward blocks of the state has seen a setting up 27 model/adarsh schools.

Additionally, 25 adarsh schools have also been set up in Punjab under the public private partnership (PPP) mode
According to Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Punjab state government is funding the opening of residential schools in Amritsar, Patiala, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali.
