The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has set up a 12-member committee headed by Prof H R Nagendra, to identify courses and programmes in Yogic Art and Science that can be offered at various levels.
The Committee on Yoga Education in Universities will submit its report in 45 days and, will also spell out the scope of programmes offered at certificate, diploma, degree, post graduate and research levels.
It will also develop broad details of the curriculum in various courses, an order by the HRD ministry said.
The Chairperson of the panel Prof Nagendra, is the Chancellor of the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, Bengaluru, and is reported to be the yoga guru of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The committee will also prescribe the syllabus for conducting NET in Yogic Art and Science and determine the eligibility qualifications for students for joining Yoga Education Programme at different levels.
In its order, the HRD ministry said that a meeting on Yoga Education in Universities was held by minister Smriti Irani with VCs in Bangalore on January 2, where it was decided to set up Department of Yogic Art and Science in Universities and constitute a Committee on Yoga Education in Universities.
The committee will also prescribe the qualifications of faculty of Yoga in the colleges and identify universities where Departments of Yoga already exists and to consider whether they can be upgraded to be developed as Departments of Yogic Art and Science.
The committee has also been asked to suggest the names of National Level Yoga Centres whose expertise can be networked with the universities where the Departments of Yogic Arts and Science will be established.
Apart from Prof Nagendra, who is the Chancellor of Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, Bengaluru, Prof Suresh Lal Barnawal, Head, Department of Yoga Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar, Prof Ishwar Bharadwaj of Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, Prof Neel Kamal, University of Patanjali, Haridwar, will be members of the committee.
The other members include Swami Atmapriyananda, VC Ramakrishna Vivekananda University, Kolkata, Pandit Radhey Shyam, Director, Ujjain Yoga Life Society International, Prof 0 P Tiwari, Kaivalayadhama, Lonawala, Prof Subramanayam, Adviser, Vivekananda College, Madurai, and Prof P Venkat Rangan, VC and Rupen Bhowmik of Indian Yoga Federation, Agartala.
Two officials, Joint Secretary, Department of AYUSH Ministry, and Secretary, UGC as Member-Convener, will also be a part of the committee.
