Kolkata: West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) may hold a 12-month preparatory course for students who have not scored well in JEE.
The proposal was floated after complaints of falling standards among engineering students and JEE.
There were 3000 vacant seats in private engineering colleges through the state this year and the JEE merit list, which initially include the names of 60,000 student was extended to 80,000.
IITs also conduct a one-year preparatory course for reserved category students who take up vacant seats. Students sit for an exam at the end of each semester. They are admitted to the first year of B Tech after passing the exams.
Private engineering colleges have not been too enthusiastic about the idea as it will require additional infrastructure and faculty.
