Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen (APJ) Abdul Kalam, India's 11th President was not just another President but the 'People's President'. A man who was named 'Missile Man' for his contribution in developing ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology also became an inspiration for everyone specially the 'youth' for his ideas and vision on education and dreams.
Unfortunately, this year we lost him after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam collapsed to death on July 27 this year while addressing students, something he loved the most, in Shillong. But, on the brighter side, Dr Kalam whose 84th birth anniversary is on October 15 will be celebrated around India paying tribute to him for his contributions.
Here's how India and world has stepped up to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narednra Modi unveiled his statue on his birth anniversary in New Delhi. He also inaugurate a photo exhibition dedicated to him "A Celebration of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Life" at DRDO Bhawan.
Expressing his happiness to be a part of this event, he tweeted, "Glad to join Dr. Kalam's birth anniversary celebrations, which includes unveiling of his statue & photo exhibition."
Maharashtra Government
Maharashtra government has announced Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam birth anniversary as Vaachan Prerna Diwas or 'Reading Day' in all schools. This will also be 'No School Bag Day' for all the students of class 3 to 8, which means students don't need to carry school bags on this day. The students will be motivated to read non-academic books including novels and poetry. Indeed a tribute to Dr. Kalam who was an avid reader himself.
Hyderabad
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will the India's key Missile Complex in Hyderabad after the name of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had been associated with the Missile Complex since 1982.
Sudarshan Pattanaik
Internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a sand sculpture of former president APJ Abdul Kalam on Puri beach on the eve of his birth anniversary as a mark of honour.
Pattnaik said he has created the five-feet high sculpture using about four tons of sand with the message "Tribute to DDr. APJ Abdul Kalam, 84th Birth Anniversary".
CBSE
Central Broad of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced 'Expression Series' on Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam which includes participation of students. Students can send their entries as essay poem or drawings on their favorite President and can win prizes.
Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu which is the birth place of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam will pay tribute to this extra-ordinary leader by declaring his birthday as 'Youth Renaissance Day'. The state has also announced a prize in the name of former President to those who work for scientific growth, humanitarian development and welfare of students.
While India is geared up to remember its Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary, his contributions were also acknowledged by United Nations (UN). UN had declared Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam birth anniversary as 'World Students Day' in the year 2010 on his 79th birth anniversary. This is an honour that will mark his birth anniversary this year too. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam who is considered as 'the best teacher' had a wish to be remembered as a teacher by people.
The UN declaration has marked Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam birth anniversary in the world which will fulfill his last wish to be remembered as a teacher to all the students on 'World Students Day'.
