IIT to consider Single Entrance Test Format

Indian Institute of Technology IIT has set up a committee to consider the proposal of going back to single entrance test for selecting aspirants from existing two-tier format. The current format has been proving difficult and 'time consuming'.

The proposal has been put before IIT senate as confirmed by IIT Bombay director Devang Khakhar. The decision of going back to single entrance test was also put considering the fact that as that the two-tier format did not leave much time for the institutes to conduct enough number of counselling sessions.

This year only three rounds of counselling were conducted by the institutes due to time constraints and involved a lot of resources in the process, said an IIT professor.

The two tier format was introduced in 2012 by the HRD Ministry under Kapil Sibal as an initiative to overhaul the examination system. It was opposed by a section of IIT, led by IIT Kanpur but finally had to accept the new system.

The current entrance of two-tier format the examination is conducted at two stages, the first stage is JEE mains and the second stage is JEE Advance. JEE Mains is conducted to select students for the second stage which is JEE Advance. Clearing both the stages ensured admission to IIT. however, clearing just the first stage IIT Mains ensures a seat in NITs.

With IIT mulling to go back to single entrance test , students would have to give single test for admissions in IIT.
