Madras University Students boycotting Classes

Madras University has resumed classes in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration but a majority of the Madras University students are still boycotting the classes demanding a negotiation with the vice-chancellor.

The Madras University resumed classes for the department on Monday, five days after it suspended the classes though no official circular was issued. Madras University Students said they received a text message regarding the classes but them attended the classes on Monday. On Tuesday, too, only 30 to 40 of the total 120 students turned up in class.

Issuing a circular on August 26 suspending classes indefinitely for the department, the university authorities asked the department students to VACATE the premises. As many as 10 postgraduate students and scholars of the department were suspended for protesting on the campus for the last 13 days, demanding the reinstatement of their professor Ramu Manivannan as head of the department (in charge). It has been reported that the professor had often clashed with the management as a strong supporter of student protests, voicing his opinion on issues of alleged mismanagement in the Madras university.

Madras University Students agitated against the demotion of Professor Manivannan, who was the acting head of this department. He was reportedly asked to take administrative action against the students who took part in the liquor prohibition protests in Tamil Nadu. When he refused, he was allegedly demoted. It is likely that the protests will continue till Manivannan is reinstated as the HoD.
