The Odisha state's school students discontinue rate continues to be very high as a latest survey informs that only 6.67% of Odisha literate population has has finished graduation.
The number of graduates in Odisha is less than the national average of 8.15%. Among 2.67 crore educated people in Odisha state, only 17.83 lakh people are graduates. Over 32.17 lakh (12.03%) people have studied till matriculation while for 17.38 lakh (6.50%), people have studied only upto higher secondary.
Among the 17.83 lakh graduates in the state, 11.75 lakh (65.93%) are non-technical graduates, 2.94 lakh (16.49%) post-graduates, 2,08 lakh (11.66%) engineers and technology degree holders and 28,517 (1.60%) have medicine degrees.
The survey data, which were announced last week, also show that despite reservation, the ratio of SC/ST students in higher education remains very less.
Among medical graduates in the odisha state, only 1,113 are SCs (3.9%) and 804 STs (2.81%). This was found recently as during a recruitment drive this year, there were no applicants against 100 posts reserved for the SCs and STs. In engineering graduates, 15,500 (7%) are SCs and 9441 STs (4.5%).
While talking about the report, professor at Regional Institute of Higher Education Pritish Acharya said, "Though these data's were collected around four years ago, I don't think the situation has changed much."
