In an effort to fill up 5,550 vacant seats in NIT, IIT and other government-funded technical institutions (GFTIs), and to give chance to aspiring candidates, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) on Wednesday announced the deadline for an additional special round as August 17.
The CSAB on August 7 announced that it will conduct additional special round to cover vacant seats of 23,919 in IIT and NIT. Out of the 5,550 seats vacant, around 3,100 are in NIT alone; some are in sought-after institutes, such as in Patna,Surathkal,Warangal. While most of the IIT and NIT seats are vacant in unpopular courses, however courses such as computer science and mechanical, engineering, civil and electrical are also empty.
Since still there are requests from students to Join IIT and NIT, the centre has decided to conduct the additional round for all. "There is no harm if admissions are done on the basis of merit and all the aspirants get a chance," he added.
But parents are against the board for allowing students who have got one chance to secure their seats. CSAB's Facebook page is being flooded with students fighting over the revised rules announced on Tuesday night. "They cannot change rules so many times. When in the beginning they said that students who have not locked their seats will not get another chance, what is the point in opening the admission process to all now?" asked a parent.
