A 24-year-old murder convict , who is undergoing 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in Varanasi Central Jail, has topped the Diploma Exam in Tourism Studies exam of the Indira Gandhi National Open University IGNOU. The murder convict, Ajit Kumar Saroj, had killed his neighbour during a dispute over land. Prof GC Jaiswal, vice-chancellor of Ram Manohar Lohia Awadh University, honoured Ajit at IGNOU's 28th convocation of IGNOU held at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Saturday.
"We awarded murder convict Ajit with a gold medal for achieving the first rank in India", said the VC. Ajit's father Ram Bachan Saroj said: "Ajit tried to save us during a land dispute fight. Since then, we have decided that we should not fight with anybody on any issue. My son is in jail since 2012 and we have been waiting for his release every day. But only three years have passed." Senior Superintendent of Jail Sanjeeev Tripathi said, "We are happy over murder convict Ajit's achievement. "
28th convocation of IGNOU was held on August 8. It was conducted same time at 56 centres across the country, with the main function being held in Delhi. The function was by the former chairman of University Grants Commission, Hari Gautam. The university had also invited the former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University, D.P. Singh as the special guest.
The convocation was conducted for the students who passed their Master's degree programmes in December 2013 and June 2014 academic year examinations.
