The Delhi University has now permitted the students to appear for the viva through skpye or other ways of video conferencing. Before this decision was taken, students had to appear for the viva in person for the doctoral studies. This was really very difficult for those PhD scholars, who were ready to submit their thesis while they were abroad as they had to travel back to India to attend the viva.
The thesis which the PhD students will be submitting, will have to undergo a plagiarism check, and if they failed their thesis will be rejected. This process has been made mandatory by the Delhi university and specialised softwares have been obtained for this purpose.
The Delhi university PhD students will have to inform their concerned departments prior if they are interested in appearing for the viva through skype or any other mode of video-conferencing. Also, if a person from the interview panel fails to make to meet the student in person, then the viva will be arranged through similar modes.
This directive came from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which states that every PhD thesis has to pass through the plagiarism check by using specialized plagiarism software.
According to newspaper reports, a Delhi University official said that there are lots of softwares available in the internet too to check plagiarism, but they do not give exact results. Hence Delhi university is trying to get certain specialised softwares so that cut-paste job can be caught by the authorities.
These changes got approval during an Executive Council (EC) meeting of the Delhi university last week. It has already been announced that the time span for finishing PhD has also been increased from four years to upto 6.5 years.
