CBCS to be implemented in all central universities

Updated on: Thursday, July 09, 2015

Clearing the confusion among flustered students and parents, the controversial Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) syllabus will finally be rolled out by all central universities for the academic session 2015-2016. This decision came in spite of protests from a large number of teachers and students.

A meeting of Vice Chancellors was called in by the Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry on July 7 to discuss about the implementation of the CBCS syllabus. Most of the universities have put a mechanism in place for the programme and have apparently also set the syllabus and structure.

While only a few universities sought for one more year for the implementation, most institutions including the Delhi University agreed to roll over the CBCS syllabus in order to allow seamless mobility across higher education institutions, let students choose multidisciplinary subjects and even transfer the credits earned in one institution.

The meeting was chaired by higher education secretary V S Oberoi in the absence of HRD minister Smriti Irani. Out of the 39 universities present, 37 have decided to introduce the CBCS at the post-graduate level. The University Grants Commission has developed syllabi on 103 subjects, 85 of which are main line courses and 18 are specialised courses, giving 30 per cent choice to the universities to make changes in the syllabus.

A meeting with the Vice Chancellors is slated to be held in October before the President rates colleges' performances.
