IIT Admissions: More number of Candidates from CBSE

IITs have been India's greatest path to economic and social mobility. The IIT Admissions are dominated by the students from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Board. Around 59 percent short listed candidates are the students from CBSE, who got qualified for admissions this year.

It had been noted that getting into the right coaching academy mattered more than actually attending schools, in order to get into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). But the new system which gives more importance to the Class 12 scores of the candidates, changed the whole game. Over 57 percent of IIT Admissions from CBSE Board were selected in IITs in the year 2012. This count only increased over the years. About 75 percent students came from four boards which include the CBSE, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan state boards in the list of selected candidates for the IITs.

More than 20,000 out of 26,456 or over 75 percent IIT Admissions from these boards. Therefore, if a student wants to get into one of these premier engineering institutes, then passing Class 12 from one of these boards gives the push they need to face the tough competition. An IIT director told TOI, "Many CBSE students always managed to crack the JEE. But we see that each year, the earlier dynamics of the other state boards kept changing,". He added "Even among the top rankers, we see a kind of shift after each exam."
