The Kerala government is to launch multi-media digital collaborative textbooks in all government schools, which will be used to teach the students. The multi-media textbooks will be accessible on computers as well as on mobile phones and would be first made available for high school students.For the digital textbooks, the hard copy of the course books will be scanned and uploaded for the students.
By selecting the marked areas in the online textbooks, the students will get access to the details related to the selected portions of the textbooks. The chapters and topics will be explained in audio and video formats by the subject experts.The video content facility will allow the students to get information from famous experts. More than one expert will explain a single topic via the video facility. The digital textbooks will become operational from the new academic session to be used on experiment basis and will be launched on the fourth anniversary of the Kerala government.
The Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Oommen Chandy, said that this is the first time in the country that a state is introducing digital multi-media collaborative textbooks in schools. The project would be implemented by the IT School under the Kerala Government education department. "The digital textbooks would be made available on computers and mobile phones. In Kerala, most of the schools have broadband internet facility. Initially, the scheme would be launched in high schools," the education department sources informed a daily.
