Updated on: Wednesday, May 06, 2015

While  the case in the Supreme Court has been pending against deemed universities for over four years, several colleges, which  has applied for deemed university status, are facing a lot of difficulties as the HRD ministry is not yet  initiated any move.  University Grants Commission (UGC) website shows, applications of 25 institutions, which includes five colleges  from Tamil Nadu, two colleges from unified Andhra Pradesh, one each from Kerala and Karnataka are pending with the commission for conferment of deemed university status.

“Five years ago the then UPA government stopped the process to award deemed university status to institutions as it wanted to review the status of existing deemed universities and since then the HRD ministry had not given Autonomous status to new applicants” said SRM University founder-chancellor T.R. Pachamuthu.

“Deemed universities have been providing good quality education for a long time and even as the country needs more such universities, the present government, has not taken steps to grant deemed university status. ” he said. “Though a case is pending in the Supreme Court,  becoming a deemed university for many colleges would be difficult because they have  to follow UGC’s 2010 regulation for deemed universities that requires several strict  provisions like the promoter of the institution should not be the chancellor of the University “ Said, UGC sources.
