According to this year counselling data of Anna University none of the Engineering colleges in Chennai has been given the Autonomous status. Though Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur has more than 40% of engineering colleges under Anna University, and more than 150 autonomous institutions in Tamil Nadu, only 27 of them are engineering colleges and the remaining are Arts and science colleges.
"Most of the colleges are not applying for Autonomous, because it requires more Responsibility in maintaining infrastructure, qualified faculty, good curriculum and achieving the required norms set by government" said Mr.Balaguruswamy Former vice-chancellor of Anna University.
Some of the technical institutes complain on high fees and long waiting time as the reason for not applying autonomous. Prof .K Manivannan, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC), RMK Engineering College said, all the colleges should provide the quality education to gain the autonomous status. "Anna University has no issues in awarding autonomous if the college’s fulfills all the requirements" said Prof M Rajaram, Anna University vice-chancellor.
