More courses in phase 2 of NPTEL: IIT Director

Chennai: More courses would be added in the second phase of IIT's 'National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL)', IIT Madras Director M S Ananth said today.

Stating that under this programme several courses were offered in engineering UG programmes since 2004, in the first phase, he said 'the Centre has sanctioned Rs 96 crore for the second phase (2007-12), in which 600 new courses would be added in UG and PG level.'

In the first pahse, engineering in Civil, Mechanical, Electronics and Communication and Electrical were offered, Ananth told reporters here.  The course materials were designed by IIT and IISc Bangalore. 'As the course is available online - with class room sessions directly from a teacher - the student will find it highly useful', he said.

He said 75.17 per cent visitors of the website were from India while 17.92 per cent came from US and the rest by global students.

Around 42 per cent accessing the website were students while teaching community formed eight per cent and rest 50 used by professionals to learn from the NPTEL programme.
