English proficiency Test was conducted by IIT's to identify the standard of English language of freshers. The exam mostly consists of objective type questions, an essay and questions to test the grammar and vocabulary skill of the students.
Prof. V.G. Idichandy former.Deputy Director and Professor emeritus at IIT-M's Ocean Engineering department told the students tend to focus more on subjects like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry since question will be asked only from these subjects for Maths, Physics & Chemistry. The reason for this poor performance in English is the students did not concentrate on languages in the school level.
According the students point of view, they mostly concentrate on Maths, Physics, Chemistry because those subjects are necessary for IIT admissions.
In fact, schools are not concentrate on languages since the language marks are not considered in any levels. Most of the language hours will be pre occupied by science or Maths teachers.
