Meeting of the council:
The Indian Institute of Technology council Meeting held on Monday in Chennai. This 48th meeting of the council was chaired by Smriti Irani, the Union Human Resource Development. The heads of IIT’s also participated in the meeting.
IIT’S PAST SELECTION SYSTEM:
A student should clear JEE main Examinations. JEE main Exam results can be used to get admissions in National Institute of Technologies and the Institutions which have agreed to accept students who have cleared in JEE –Main. This includes centrally funded Institutions also. To get into IIT they have to cross JEE (Advanced examination and they also need to be in the top 20 percentile of his or her school board.
Present Updates:
1. It is decided also to permit the students to IIIT final counseling the students who have got 75% and above in their school board exam besides 20 percentile norms.
2. A) Students from general, other Backward communities and Non creamy Layer Categories needed to secure 75% marks.
b) Students belonging to SC/ST persons with disability had to score 70% or above aggregate marks in board exams, which even lower are eligible.
Dis-advantage of the earlier system:
Last about 200 students had got top scores in JEE (Advanced) still they could not join I.I.T because they became ineligible because of 20 percentile criteria. The students who have exclusively wasted hard lost their opportunities.
In particular, the students from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala were very much affected, because of 20 percentile norms.
Since the cut off used to be around 90% or above. It is difficult for a student to make himself in the list of top 20 percentile.
Advantage:
The new formula will favour every IIT aspirants. This will bring wonderful relief to students. The students who work very hard by taking all possible efforts to do well both in their XII board as well as IIT examinations will be favoured without bios by this new facility.
Ranking System:
It is obvious the Indian universities are not showing any good progress in getting the rank among the world universities. But efforts are being taken to rectify this issue.
According to the secretary to Ministry of Human Resource Development + Ashok Thakur, the HRD along with IIT’s will from a ranking system specifically for Indian Institutions. IIT will lead to formulate this ranking. A probable from work will be made by IIT in association with central universities on or before December of this year. Subsequent to this to various parameters will be decided to divide the ranking. This will be applicable to all Institutions funded by UGC and AICTE.
