A new type of gel molecule is developed from cheap and renewable raw materials by IIT - Chennai and Pondicherry University. The professors of these Institutions along with their students have done this challenging job. The name of the newly developed molecule is, “Glucose triazole hydrogenated candanol conjugate” abbreviated as GTHCC.
GTHCC is applicable to the fields of pharmacology, cosmetics, electronics, pollution control and lubrication.
The contributions to this particular development are worth mentioning here.
The gel is prepared from glucose and a byproduct obtained from, cashew nut shell liquid. Cashew nut gel liquid is the by product of cashew nut industry and this was done by H.Surya Prakash Rao, the chemistry professor of Pondicherry university. The getting property of GTHCC was discovered by Ashok. K. Mishra the professor of chemistry IIT-Madras and his student Jitendriya Swain. The details were published in the Journal of Royal society of chemistry. Subsequently the team of this research applied to get the patent right for their product. Mr. Rao said that this hydro gel was stable under acidic and basic conditions. He added that Gluoside (sugar) based gels are susceptible to hydrolysis in acidic stage and so their applications are limited. Instead GT HLC is stable in both acid end basic conditions. It was explained by Mishra that this gel shows it unique gelling property even at very low concentration with various solvents.
Polymeric gets are complex while this is simple and it can from get with variety of components even at very low concentration.
